Central and Station 5 were dispatched to 36 Essex St. for a report of smoke detector activation and smell of smoke from the first floor apartment. First in Engine Co. reported no smoke conditions visible from the outside of the building, no visible fire. Shortly after entering the building the, Engine 1 had smoke and fire conditions in the building, lines were pulled and fire operations began. The Assistant Chief assumed command, the Engine Co. quickly knocked the fire down, search and rescue efforts cleared the building.

Once again the Professional Firefighters of Bangor knocked down a fire and kept the damage limited. Saving the building or saving lives, just another day on the job.

On October 25, 2009, Bangor Firefighter Randy Macdonald finished 469 out of nearly 21,000 runners in the 26.2 mile Marine Corps marathon at Washington DC. Randy finished second out of all Maine runners with a time of 3 hrs 13 min 6 sec. Finishing first for Maine and first in the marathon was John Mentzer from Kittery. Randy was participating with the IAFF Firefighters Union team and raised $1200 for the IAFF Burn Foundation. Look for Randy’s name again, running in more marathons. His great finish has made him eligible for the Boston Marathon in 2010.

Great job Randy, some say they will step up and make a difference, you made it 26.2 miles.
